Terms of Use
Written to accurately reflect the current state of the product (Alpha 4.1) and against Argentina's Ley 24.240 (consumer protection), Ley 25.326 (data protection), and the Código Civil y Comercial, plus general international good practice. Vestige is built by a small university team, not a law firm; this is our good-faith current policy, and we'll revisit it as the product and team grow.

1. Acceptance of these terms
By downloading, installing, or using Vestige Play ("Vestige", "the app"), you agree to these Terms of Use and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
2. What Vestige is (and isn't)
Vestige Play is a free desktop planning tool that connects to your Steam library to help you decide what to play, when, and for how long. It:
- Is not a game store or marketplace; it doesn't sell or distribute games.
- Is not a social network; it has no friends system, feed, or public profiles.
- Is not a game launcher; it doesn't launch or modify your games.
- Is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to Valve Corporation or Steam. "Steam" is a trademark of Valve Corporation; Vestige is an independent, unofficial companion tool that uses Steam's public APIs.
3. Eligibility
You must be able to legally hold a Steam account in your country to use Vestige (Steam's own terms generally require you to be at least 13, with additional restrictions depending on your country). By using Vestige, you confirm you meet Steam's own eligibility requirements, since we don't independently verify your age beyond what Steam already requires for its own platform.
If you are a minor under Argentine law, your use of Vestige (including your acceptance of these Terms) is understood to be made with the knowledge and authorization of your parent or legal guardian, consistent with the capacity rules for minors under Argentina's Código Civil y Comercial (Articles 26 and following). If you are the parent or guardian of a minor who uses Vestige, you are responsible for supervising that use.
4. Your Steam account and login
Vestige uses Steam OpenID to authenticate you; you log in directly on Steam's own site, and we never see or store your Steam password. You're responsible for keeping your own Steam account secure (e.g., using Steam Guard); we have no access to it beyond what you explicitly authorize via OpenID.
5. Alpha status — things may break
Vestige Play is in active alpha development. By using it, you understand and accept that:
- Features may change, be removed, or break between updates without notice.
- Bugs are expected; we'd appreciate a report via the in-app "Report a bug" button, but we make no uptime or reliability guarantees.
- Data-sync and other cloud-dependent features may occasionally be unavailable (e.g., if our backend or database provider has downtime).
- We do not guarantee the app will always be free forever, though it is free today and we do not currently have plans to charge for core functionality. If we ever introduce charges for functionality that is currently free, we will provide reasonable advance notice before it takes effect for existing users.
6. Third-party data (HowLongToBeat, Steam Store data)
Vestige displays estimated completion times (Main Story / Main + Extras / Completionist) that reflect data you can also view directly on HowLongToBeat.com, and game metadata (Metacritic scores, genres, reviews) sourced from the Steam Store. This data is provided for informational purposes only, we don't guarantee its accuracy, and it belongs to its respective sources, not to us. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to HowLongToBeat.com.
Important note on how this data is retrieved: Vestige does not use an official public API from HowLongToBeat.com; no such API is offered. Duration data is retrieved via a third-party, community-maintained library (howlongtobeatpy) that queries the same internal endpoint HowLongToBeat's own website uses to power its search feature. We rely on this because it's the only practical way to surface this information inside the app; we don't control, and can't fully guarantee, how that endpoint behaves or whether it remains available. This feature may change or stop working if HowLongToBeat.com updates its site.
7. Donations
Donations via Ko-fi or Cafecito are voluntary and non-refundable. As of this version, donating does not unlock any paid feature or content; Vestige remains fully free regardless of whether you donate. (This may change if/when the planned Market/cosmetics feature launches, and this document will be updated if and when that happens, and any future paid content will have its own clear terms.)
8. Community (Discord)
Our optional Discord server has its own rules, enforced independently of these Terms. Participation is optional and governed by Discord's own Terms of Service in addition to our server rules.
9. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with Vestige in order to bypass security measures or extract our backend's Steam API key.
- Use Vestige to violate Steam's own Terms of Service or Subscriber Agreement.
- Abuse our backend (e.g., automated scraping, excessive requests outside normal app usage) in a way that degrades the service for other users.
- Use the bug-report or community channels to harass others or share illegal content.
10. Intellectual property
- The Vestige Play name, logo, mascot ("Boo"), and visual design are owned by Vestige Team. You may not use them to represent your own product without permission.
- Your Steam library data remains yours; Vestige only reads and displays it back to you, and we don't claim ownership of it.
- Game names, artwork, and metadata belong to their respective publishers/ Valve; Vestige displays this data for informational, non-commercial purposes, consistent with the applicable limitations and exceptions to copyright protection under Argentina's Ley 11.723 and equivalent provisions in other jurisdictions where you may access the app.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
Vestige Play is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including, without limitation, warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We don't guarantee the app will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that any particular prediction/recommendation it makes will be accurate. This disclaimer does not exclude or limit any warranty that cannot be lawfully excluded or limited under Argentina's Ley de Defensa del Consumidor (Law No. 24,240) or other mandatory consumer-protection rules that may apply to you.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable Argentine law, Vestige Team shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, including loss of data, loss of progress, or inability to access the app or your synced data, arising from your use of, or inability to use, Vestige Play. This limitation does not exclude or limit liability in cases where it cannot be lawfully excluded or limited under Argentina's Ley de Defensa del Consumidor (Law No. 24,240) or other mandatory consumer-protection rules that may apply to you as a user.
This clause reflects a reasonable, good-faith reading of Argentine consumer law as it applies today. As Vestige grows, we'll revisit this paragraph with a lawyer to confirm its enforceable scope stays accurate.
13. Termination
We may suspend or discontinue Vestige, or any part of it (including your access to our backend/sync service), at any time. You may stop using Vestige and request deletion of your data at any time (see the Privacy Policy, Section 4).
14. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Argentina, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of Vestige Play shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts of Argentina, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your own country of residence grants you the right to bring a claim in your local courts instead (this Terms of Use does not attempt to override such mandatory rights where they legally apply to you). For users domiciled in Argentina, this clause does not override the venue rules of Article 36 of Ley 24.240, which generally allows a consumer to bring a claim before the courts of their own domicile.
15. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable by a competent court, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms as Vestige evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated review date at the top of this document.
